The Downside of Social Media
Recently, Forbes has received backlash from the readers on social media as they put Kylie Jenner on the cover of the magazine for “America’s Women Billionaires” August 2018 issue. This was the first ever Kylie Jenner’s cover on Forbes magazine and she received a lot of hateful comments because of the caption on her cover which is “the youngest ever self-made billionaire”.
Social media can be a toxic place as most of the people tweeted and commented on her social media saying that she did not deserve to receive the title of “self-made billionaire” as she was born into a wealthy family of Kris Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner. One of the tweets from her hater says that it is easy to become a billionaire when her parents are millionaires, and it is not called a self-made billionaire, it is called generational wealth and nepotism.
Social media may be a place to find people and connecting with them, however there are a few downsides of using social media and one of it is people tend to make comparisons. Girls in particular like to compare themselves with what and who they see on social media in all aspects of life, for example, physical appearance and comparing their everyday life with Kylie Jenner’s life. This could lead to low self-esteem and self-worth in the future. Girls need to stop comparing themselves with all these models and celebrities on Instagram and Twitter because you are not them.
Social media was created to share and connect with people on the Internet, not to compare your so-called basic life with their everyday life. People share only the highlight of their life on social media because they want to impress people and it does not mean they have a perfect life. So stop comparing yourself with what you see on social media.
